A frequency inverter drive, also known as a variable frequency drive (VFD), is an electronic device that controls the speed and torque of an AC (alternating current) electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage of the electrical power supplied to the motor.
Traditionally, the speed of AC motors was controlled by adjusting the voltage applied to the motor using mechanical devices such as gears and pulleys. However, with the advent of frequency inverter drives, the speed of AC motors can be easily controlled by varying the frequency of the AC power supplied to the motor.
A frequency inverter drive takes the incoming AC power, converts it into DC power, and then uses an inverter to convert it back into AC power with variable frequency and voltage. By controlling the frequency and voltage of the AC power supplied to the motor, the frequency inverter drive can control the speed and torque of the motor.
Frequency inverter drives are widely used in industrial applications such as pumps, fans, conveyors, and compressors, as they offer energy savings, precise speed control, and improved process control.
